Possible Selves: Research and Counseling With Rural Youth and Families

Abstract

In the current climate of economic uncertainty and socio-political restructuring, young people in rural communities are experiencing increasing uncertainty regarding options for life and work. In addition, the stress associated with industry closures, service cutbacks, family transitions, and limited educational opportunities are putting these young people at risk for health problems such as substance abuse and depression. This paper summarizes qualitative and quantitative data from research conducted over more than seven years in rural communities in British Columbia, Canada. The construct of Possible Selves was utilized to assess adolescents’ current cognitions and to develop an innovative mapping tool for goal discussion and planning. Their experiences of supports, issues, and challenges have implications for counseling practice and educational policy.
