This study seeks to determine whether provision of books to students for summer reading, along with information for parents on reading activities, will mitigate the amount of learning loss in reading that commonly occurs over the summer for students in high-needs schools. Test scores on a norm-referenced assessment will be examined between the year prior to and the year of implementation of a summer reading project. Three types of samples are of interest, including a cross-sectional school-wide sample, a longitudinal matched sample of participant students, and two virtual matched comparison samples. This study will provide evidence on the effectiveness of a relatively inexpensive method to address the summer learning loss issue.
