Abstract

We share a responsibility as educators to understand the role of art in our academic lives. In this paper, we theorize our academic composing practices through our relationships with both the visual arts and language. We draw on theories of art making experiences, social construction of meaning, and poststructural theories of power and capital to interpret image making as an expressive practice in academic composing. By theorizing the academic composer as a smith of words and images, we challenge the existing expressive structures that limit who can and who cannot participate in academia.
