The 2007 LGBT Teachers School Climate Survey (Smith, et al 2006) investigated LGBTQ educators’ perceptions of their workplace climate and the possible impact of school leaders on that climate. The researchers revised the survey instrument to conduct the National Survey of (LGBT) Educators’ Perceptions of School Climate 2011. Preliminary descriptive data show that LGBT educators still hear homophobic remarks from students and principals; they feel as if their jobs are at risk if they are out to students or a principal; they feel that their communities are less safe for them than in 2007. An important conclusion based on the results is that school leaders are part of the problem and could be part of the solution.
