Abstract

This paper will present recent research in the area of growth norms using curriculum-based measurement of oral reading (CBM-OR). An overview of growth norms and CBM-OR will be provided. The overview will be contextualized within a preventative framework of response-to-intervention (RTI). Recent research will be presented on the use of growth norms with CBM-OR to evaluate student growth. Results of the present research indicate that growth norms can potentially provide an unbiased method of both setting appropriate goals for students and evaluating the extent to which a student is making appropriate achievement gains. Finally, the results will provide empirically derived weekly growth estimates for CBM-OR for third and fifth grades for students of different levels of initial ability.
