Abstract

In this paper, I engage image and text to re/present identities of women loving women, of lesbians gathered from Lesbian/Gay Archives in San Francisco, New York, and Los Angeles. Using a postmodern, poststructural analysis, I integrate image and text as voice, thus moving the burden of identity away from the notion of voice and into other ways of meaning making. In this project, I call into question the self-evidence of the present of lesbian identity through exposing various ways in which this identity was constructed in the past thereby using history to problematize the very subject I am studying. It is this problematizing of theoretical and epistemological classifications of lesbian identity that emerges in this paper.
