Literature on engagement has largely focused on how certain practices foster disciplinary engagement. As yet there is little within engagement literature that looks specifically at disengagement. In order to further understand disengagement, this paper looks at what figured worlds (Holland et al., 2000) one novice math teacher engaged in during her first three years of teaching. This paper discursively analyzes thirteen interviews pulled from a larger study (Horn, Nolen, Ward, & Campbell, 2008; Nolen, Horn, Ward, & Childers, 2011; Nolen et al., 2009) using aspects of engagement outlined in Engle and Conant (2002) and Nasir and Hand (2008). Results show the ways the novice teacher engaged in various figured worlds and how these layers of engagement informed teaching practice.
