An Internal Exploration of the Santa Barbara School District’s Gang and Violence Intervention Program

ABSTRACT
Luis Angel Linares1 was slain in 2007 and in 2008 the Santa Barbara School District (SBSD) implemented a Gang and Violence Intervention Program (GVIP). In 2009 I was part of the evaluation team for the S.B.S.D. GVIP. We gathered ethnographic and survey data to compound a report for the S.B.S.D. GVIP. This paper focuses on the internal validity of the evaluation survey questions. The survey questions were intended to measure the following areas: (1) attachment to school (2) community; (3) family; (4) the GVIP coordinator; and students’ interactions with local law enforcement and their policing practices (SBSD GVIP Evaluation, 2010). This paper intends to address the scale for the evaluation survey questions and explore possible avenues for future research.
