The Promise of University-School Partnerships in Urban Teacher Retention

Sat, April 14, 8:15 to 9:45am, Vancouver Convention Centre, Floor: First Level, East Ballroom C

Abstract

The study examined the experiences of Hilary in the first three years of teaching in an urban school, participation in a university school partnership and ultimately as a retained teacher in an urban district. During Hilary’s first three years as a teacher her school was creating a partnership with a nationally recognized college that excelled in teacher preparation. The research provided a lens through which to see how the partnership developed, created avenues of support and the overall successes and failures through the eyes of a teacher who it intended to support. It also allowed for an in-depth exploration of Hilary’s experiences and reflections, particularly as they pertain to her decision to remain teaching in an urban classroom.
