Evangelicals’ Perceptions of Intellectual Diversity at Elite Southern Californian Public Universities

Abstract

Over the last decade, the conservative organization the American Council of Trustees and Alumni (ACTA) has commissioned several studies investigating the degree to which prestigious universities in the U.S. have honored their commitment to students' academic freedom or, what they call, "intellectual diversity." Intellectual Diversity is a "the foundation of a learning environment that exposes students to a variety of political, ideological, and other perspectives" (ACTA, 2005). ACTA found that all of the universities in the study failed when it came to intellectual diversity. The current research is a mixed method, sequential design that investigated the degree to which elite public universities in southern California honored robust expressions of evangelical/ conservative thought.
