The work roles of faculty in public comprehensive universities have undergone significant changes in recent years. Additional evidence suggests that these changes may be due, in part, to institutional strategies and faculty reward policies that incentivize activities that can generate revenues and prestige. In the context of declining state support for public higher education, comprehensive universities may be asking their faculty to engage in new sets of behaviors. The effects of changing work role expectations on faculty at public comprehensive universities are not well understood. The purpose of this study is to examine how emerging work role expectations in public comprehensive universities may be affecting faculty job satisfaction, organizational commitment, and intention to stay or leave the institution.
