The purpose of this paper presentation is to revisit Dewey’s (1938) ideas set forth in Experience and Education and his various works on democratic education. In particular, the paper will consider Dewey’s criteria for an educative experience as a lens for analyzing the educative versus miseducative nature of teacher preparation, exploring curricular and/or pedagogical actions. The authors examine the increasingly complex nature of preparing teachers today within a context of challenges that include standards and accountability, issues of social justice, shifting demographics, and myriad other social issues that hallmark the public’s distancing from schools and the distancing of education from its function in a democratic society.
