Abstract

This research investigates ecologies of cognition within a teacher education program at a large university in western Canada and how teacher candidates are prepared, and perceive their preparation, to use information and communication technologies when entering the teaching profession. Data is presented from a three-year study that focused on one cohort of thirty-eight elementary teacher candidates. We draw on an enactivist approach to cognition to analyze the complex human experiences that are conditioned by environmental relationships. The findings juxtapose theoretical positions involving: transparency, transparency constraints, incorporation, (non)incorporation, and relationality with empirical evidence to articulate aspects of human consciousness and ecologies of cognition.
