At the cusp of an era marked by the rise of access to new technologies and the diminishing public funding for arts programs in schools, this review explores the potential for new technologies and the Internet to step in during the out-of-school hours for what K-12 arts education must leave behind. We argue that out-of-school, interest-driven settings are actually well suited for the types of long-term, project-based production and participation that we value in the arts. Part of our investigation includes measuring the success of preexisting pathways into the digital youth culture in their abilities to engage youth in making and doing art, as well as drawing conclusions as to what are the most effective ways of doing so.
