Fostering Parent and Community Involvement: New Examples of Teacher Leadership From a Charitable Foundation

Mon, April 16, 8:15 to 9:45am, Vancouver Convention Centre, Floor: Second Level, East Room 10

Abstract

This paper builds upon the existing knowledge base on teacher leadership by describing new examples of teacher leadership from a teacher-led charitable foundation. Based upon results from a qualitative case study, it explores a) how teachers lead informally and formally in roles not related to instruction and b) what results from that leadership. As AERA this year addresses the conference theme of “To Know Is Not Enough” and emphasizes the need to act as well as to know, this paper provides a model of how one group of teachers has expanded their instructional role to act in new ways to serve their students.
