Beyond Knowing: Collaborating With Migrant Families for Quality Early Childhood and Parent Education

Abstract

This on-going qualitative study documents an approach to curriculum that is “beyond knowing.” It focuses on collaboration using different sources of knowledge to provide quality education for migrating families. Through the three aspects of the study 1) qualitative methods focusing on working with migrant families from Oaxaca, Mexico, 2) curriculum development framed by critical theory and the Learning Cycles Model from Brazil, and 3) Learning Story assessment from New Zealand, university early childhood student teachers support the learning of children and families within the context of their home, school, and community. This pilot project and research study document a critical, participatory approach to curriculum that provides an effective, adaptable model for migrating families across the world.
