Converting Challenges Into Motivation: An Examination of the Nature of Latina Student Resiliency

Abstract

This paper engages resiliency theory to identify the combination of personal, familial and environmental factors that contribute to the academic achievement of Latina students facing significant challenges. It draws on qualitative research methodology, including in-depth interviews with Latina immigrant students, classroom and school observations and interviews with teachers and other school staff. This paper specifically examines the interaction between the strengths and resources of students and the school environment, allowing for an understanding of the contextual nature of resiliency and risk. Through using this approach, the research provides implications for the ways schools can better incorporate and expand upon the strengths of students rather than creating or exacerbating challenges.
