What Happens When You Listen to Males? Toward a Theory of Gender-Relevant Pedagogy

Abstract

Throughout the Caribbean, we continue to witness the debilitating condition facing males in and out of school. On almost every academic (i.e. grade repetition/drop out) and social (incarceration/ murder victim) measure, males are disproportionately represented when compared to females. In their attempt to redress many of these ills, researchers, practitioners, and policy makers rarely - if ever - turn to boys to elicit
recommendations on how best to address within school difficulty or out of school illicit activity. This paper draws on focus group data from 54 young men across four secondary schools in/around Georgetown, Guyana and puts forth a Theory of Gender Relevant Pedagogy to assist pre-service teachers to design and implement curriculum that engages their male students.
