The Recent Explicit Use of Theory in Empirical Studies on Acculturation of Children

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine empirical studies published on child acculturation in terms of use of theory. Based on a computerized database search, thirty-one empirical studies published in the last 5 years were found and examined. Findings of this study indicated that more than half of the empirical studies employed theory explicitly. Common theories utilized explicitly in the studies were Berry’s and Szapocznik’s acculturation theories. Concerns about authors’ use of theory practices were addressed. Benefits of utilizing theory explicitly were discussed and suggestions for the future studies were made.
