The Role of Multilevel Strengths and Student Role Strain in STEM Research Opportunity Interventions: An Emerging Conceptual Framework

Abstract

There is a growing interest in better understanding the factors that impact the efficacy of pipeline interventions to increase the number of students from underrepresented groups who succeed in higher education and competitive career fields. While evaluation studies have supported the overall efficacy of pipeline interventions, less is known about the factors that impede and enhance the success of various program participants. Guided by a strength-based role strain and adaptation model, this literature review seeks to better clarify how various factors influence the efficacy of pipeline interventions designed to promote college success in STEM fields for underrepresented students of color. This information not only provides some theoretical understanding of how interventions operate, it also provides practical insights for future program development.
