Curriculum for a Time of Mass Migration: Collaborative Inquiry in Advanced Adult Settlement ESL (English as a Second Language)

Abstract

This collaborative inquiry explores the development of an innovative settlement ESL curriculum at the upper intermediate / advanced levels (CLB 6-8) in British Columbia, Canada. The twofold significance of the finding are that they identify: a) challenges and strengths in a collaborative approach to curriculum development for this sector; and b) elements of effective adult settlement ESL curriculum at this level, which incorporated content-, project-, and community-based approaches. Consideration is given to the ways in which, in Canada, publicly-funded adult settlement language policies and programs have targeted the development of social cohesion through the participatory citizenship and civic engagement education of newcomers within local neighbourhoods and communities.
