Abstract

The purpose of this study is to explore the effects of the volitional control strategies integrated into EFL English reading course for promoting students’ English reading achievement and volitional control. The volitional control strategies applied included cognition, emotion, motivation and environment controls. The experimental group students were instructed by the volitional control strategy program, whereas the control group students were instructed by the regular English program. After one-semester instruction, experimental group students who completed the intervention displayed significant improvement in English reading achievement and the volitional control compared with those in the control group. In conclusion, compared with the regular English reading program, the volitional control strategies integrated into English reading courses act as a positive intervention for college students.
