The Ocean as an Integrating Context for STEM Learning: A Case Study of Teacher Perspectives

Abstract

Ocean-related issues of the 21st Century, including climate change, oil spills, and nuclear waste spillage, will ultimately be addressed by STEM professionals. An inherently interdisciplinary area, the ocean provides an excellent context through which teachers can work with students to explore content and practices in each of the STEM disciplines. This case study examines the perspectives of teachers engaged in a course aimed at supporting teachers in efforts to include the ocean in K-12 curricula. Interviews, discussion posts, and documents revealed that teachers recognize the potential of the ocean as an integrating context for STEM learning, and intend to implement ocean-based STEM lessons into their regular curricula. The study is promising as a unique way to promote STEM learning.
