The objective of this research was to examine to what degree, if any, single-sex classrooms and academies for Black males are effective in improving their educational outcomes. Through a study of five newly created single-sex classrooms, we hoped to gain insights into what these classrooms spaces provide for Black males, and how they influence their schooling experiences. Four themes emerged from this qualitative study, the recognition of a need for alternate spaces for Black males, politics of resistance, no theory of change, and remediation and discipline. Data from this study shed important, yet critical insights on the challenges of single-sex educational low-income Black male students
