This paper summarizes three studies conducted to inform decisions regarding how tests administered to students in Grades 1, 2 and 3 should be presented such that scores from paper and online modalities were comparable Results highlighted the importance of examining the presentation of tests across modes for “sameness” versus modifications needed to ensure the tests are comparable. Also, the studies shed light on the importance of preparing young students for the online test taking experience. Students were capable of performing equally well on assessments presented in either modality when the presentation of items, directions (on screen and audio), and prompts intended to facilitate the test taking experience are equitable (not necessarily “equal” or the same) across the modalities.
