In this paper, we illustrate how discourses about the arts and the importance of arts education are mobilized in distinct ways in the context of contrasting specialized arts programs. Focusing on the ways in which teachers and students describe choice, opportunity, and visions of the future within these two schools, this paper illustrates how the meaning of the arts in each environment is shaped in correspondence with the socioeconomic class distinctions that characterize each school community.
