Using a sociopolitical framework, mathematics education research must attend to the needs of immigrant students. This paper seeks to develop a theoretical framework capable of addressing issues of power and identity as it relates to immigrant students in math classrooms. After exploring the literature of the sociopolitical turn in mathematics education research – supplemented by LatCrit theory, post-structuralist theories of racial and cultural identity, and more general research on immigrant students in education – this project critically examines current theories of sociopolitical math education research and their potential application to immigrant student experiences, calling into question the very discourses that shape current math education research.
