Though a growing number of people are studying languages online, it remains unclear about population composition, what users progress, and how they practice and interact with native speakers. This study examined individuals’ background, attitudes towards online language learning, and language progress on a major social network site for language learning. Mixed method approach was adopted and the data included a surveys (N1=4,174) and interviews and documentation from 20 case study participants. The results showed a positive attitudes towards learning a language online and improvement in language skills, especially in grammar, vocabulary, and writing. Though communicative features were beneficial to language learning, users may feel intimidated and be shy to initiate interaction with native speakers.
