The Impact of Using a Structured Reading Framework on Students’ Conceptual Understanding

Abstract

This study investigated the impact of the using a Structured Reading Framework within the Science Writing Heuristic approach on a summary writing task. A total of 170 students participated in the study (87 for the control, 83 for the treatment group). All students used the SWH templates and were asked to complete the summary writing task at the end of each unit. All student writing samples were scored using an analytical framework developed for the study. Results indicated that the treatment group who used the Structured Reading Framework performed significantly better on the Summary Writing task than the control group. The results suggest that the using of the Structured Reading Framework have an impact on the development of conceptual understanding.
