Modeling Cultural Competency: Student-Perceived Qualities of Culturally Competent Providers

Abstract

Overwhelming evidence indicates that racial and ethnic disparities exist within our healthcare system. Theoretical and empirical research indicates racism plays a key role in health disparities. This study applies Critical Race Theory (CRT) to student survey data to critically examine student perception of cultural competence and the qualities embodied by a culturally competent provider. Findings indicate a disconnect between student perception of culturally competent care and process-oriented cultural competency training, which may be rectified by first acknowledging the prejudices within the culture of medicine before educating students.
