The purpose of this longitudinal study is to report the results of a federally-funded randomized control trial examining the efficacy of the Balanced Leadership Professional Development (BLPD) program created by Mid-continent Research for Education and Learning (McREL). Using Kirkpatrick’s revised typology for evaluating training interventions, this research assessed the impact of BLPD program on research-based factors known to influence student achievement. Employing the reports of treatment and control school principals over two years of training, results show that BLPD participants reported greater growth on the majority of the outcomes targeted by the program than did control school principals. Moreover, differences between the treatment and control school principals on several of these targeted outcomes were positive and statistically significant.
