Abstract

When a partial credit analysis revealed problems with test items, cognitive interviews with test-takers helped provide answers why. Fifth and sixth grade earth science students were interviewed while they took a science test about ecosystems. This study provides insight into how students understand the contents of the earth science module and it sheds light on why items are problematic and in some cases how to remedy the troublesome aspect(s) of the item.
