A Measure of Teachers’ Skills in Detecting Effective Classroom Interactions: The Video Assessment of Interactions and Learning

Abstract

An expanding body of research suggests that the ability to see effective interactions in the context of teaching is an essential precursor to consistently demonstrating these skills in the classroom. The Video Assessment of Interactions and Learning (VAIL) is a new measure which assesses teachers’ skills in detecting effective classroom interactions. This measure consists of watching teaching videos and identifying strategies the teacher in the video is using to facilitate effective interactions in the classroom, and specific, behavioral examples of the strategies. The present study investigates the psychometric properties and predictive validity of the VAIL. Findings suggest that the VAIL significantly predicts how teachers perform in the classroom, and more importantly, measures a skill which can be improved with practice.
