Sat, April 14, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Vancouver Convention Centre, Floor: First Level, East Ballroom B

Abstract

Classroom and behavioral management is a source of stress for preservice as well as practicing teachers. As teacher educators seek to assist preservice teachers in acquiring critical classroom management skills, it may be important to explore whether preservice teachers seeking different levels of certification have different preconceptions, beliefs, and concerns regarding managing classrooms. This study explored differences in the perspectives of preservice teachers seeking elementary certification and secondary certification in relation to classroom management. Journal reflections in response to topics relating to classroom management, as well as responses to case study scenarios illustrated differences based on certification area. Differences in the perceptions of these groups of future teachers may help teacher educators more effectively teach classroom management skills.
