Abstract

Drawing on critical theories, including Marxist critiques of neoliberalism, and firsthand accounts of his own involvement as coeditor of Rethinking Schools, Wayne Au (2009a, 2009b; Apple, Au, & Gandin, 2010) will relay the history and political project of this non-profit grassroots education journal and publishing house. For over 25 years, Rethinking Schools has served as a leading publication for teachers and community members interested in education for social justice. Conceived as an activist project, its publications have influenced hundreds of thousands of educators throughout the United States and the world. In this way, Rethinking Schools is a model for projects that counter the neoliberal paradigm and invite increased democratic participation in education reform movements.
