Abstract

Kristen Buras (2009, 2011, 2012) will provide commentary based on her research in New Orleans. Critical theories of political economy and race illuminate her analysis of data gathered through classroom observations, interviews with teachers, community organizers, and reform organizations, and policy documents. She will illuminate the effects of state policy and philanthropically-funded local organizations on reconstitution of the city's teachers union and newly chartered public schools. Particular attention will be paid to the impact on black veteran teachers and students of color. She will also share the history and work of Urban South Grassroots Research Collective as an effort to resist privatization from the ground up.
