An Evaluation of Statewide Online Professional Development for Integration of Laptops and Mobile Devices in the Middle School Curriculum: Year 2 Report

Abstract

A large-scale, online professional development project was conducted to support teachers as they integrate laptops, mobile devices, and other tools in the middle school curriculum. This paper evaluates the effectiveness of the professional development and the project’s influence on teacher practice. Results suggest that the project has had a substantial impact on participants’ attitudes, knowledge, and practice. Data also indicate consistent advances in students’ 21st Century skills and engagement in learning. Further, they show that teachers are excited by the various technology tools and report transformative changes in their teaching. Overall, it appears that the model for online professional development is viable, particularly in concert with access to rich technology resources and the expertise and support provided by project facilitators.
