Abstract

Developing nations put an emphasis on education to get their citizens out of poverty. A better educated workforce, it is believed, is likely to spur economic growth. With all the emphasis and efforts, however, there still exists a ‘gender gap’ in education attainment in the developing world. Thus, examining differences between males and females in terms of math and reading achievements is a necessary step towards understanding the magnitude of educational inequality. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to investigate, through meta-analysis, whether or not there are significant gender differences in reading and math among Sub-Saharan African K-12 students.
