The Effectiveness of Cognitive Augmentation Computer-Assisted Instruction in Special Education: A Meta-Analysis

Abstract

Despite a promising overall effect of computer-assisted instruction (CAI) found in literature, fundamental differences between various types of CAI may distort the apparent effectiveness when applied to particular groups of exceptional children. In order to investigate critical moderators contributing to learning effects of using CAI with exceptional children, this meta-analysis examined the studies where CAI was used to augment cognitive skills of K-12 students with cognitive disabilities who are qualified for special education services. In addition, this meta-analysis compared effectiveness of CAI with other teaching models and investigated CAI design features that are critical for individual students with different special needs.
