Managing Conflict in Video Clubs

Mon, April 16, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Vancouver Convention Centre, Floor: Second Level, West Room 221

Abstract

One aspect of professional development that has the potential to impact teacher learning is whether teachers form communities. Further, the way in which those communities handle conflict and the degree to which community members share opposing viewpoints can result in varying degrees of teacher learning. Thus, this study examines how teachers express disagreement and deal with opposing ideas while participating in video clubs. Specifically, this research uses conversation analysis to identify two interaction patterns surrounding disagreement in video clubs. We then consider the impact of those patterns on teacher learning and propose contextual factors that might contribute to the development of each pattern.
