Drawing on decades of work and research through the Commercialism in Education Research Unit (CERU) and more recently the National Education Policy Center (NEPC), Alex Molnar (2005, 2006; Welner et al., 2010) will examine the key assumptions underlying market-oriented reforms and provide a critique of their disjuncture with the democratic ideals of public education. His analyses will also illuminate the influence of think tanks and the media on shaping public perceptions of education reforms, such as portfolio school districts, and their alleged success.
