• In Event: Education You Can Bank On: Portfolio School Districts and the Bottom Lining of Public Schools

Abstract

Providing a global perspective on decentralization and privatization, Jill Pinkney Pastrana (2007, 2008) considers historical evidence and recent firsthand accounts of the effects of neoliberal policy in Chile. In the late 1970s following Augusto Pinochet's military coup, Chile became the first testing ground for many of the strategies that currently aid the privatization of public assets, including public schools. Mass student and teacher protests over ongoing financial austerity and the arrival of New Orleans' Paul Vallas in Chile through a $1 million contract to expand the New Orleans model globally raise serious concerns.
