How Do I Contribute to Creating Awareness of Human Rights Using Visual Graphics?

Abstract

My research illustrates how the use of graphic imagery among incoming university visual art students, may help to inculcate awareness of human rights, social responsibility and contribute to reinserting the public good in South African higher education. My research provides an opportunity to counter a noticeable decline in the students’ response and sensitivity to the freedoms entrenched in the South African Bill of Rights. I use action research as a meta-methodology in relation to a qualitative, mixed method image-based enquiry to introduce specific curricular interventions which requires students to develop visual responses to address selected human rights violations. The critical outcomes impact positively on re-inserting the discourse of human rights as a basic tenet of constitutional democracy in higher education
