Abstract

We are at a critical moment in thinking about the role of digital media in America’s schools. Despite what we know about the significance of digital media in adolescents’ everyday lives, digital media research has remained on the periphery of formal school contexts. This qualitative study in an urban, public high school examines how literacy and learning are changing in the face of digital media and shares the possibilities and challenges for teaching and learning when schools avail themselves to the digital mindsets of adolescents by addressing the following questions: How are adolescents’ uses of digital media shaping their experiences of school and informing the ways they use language? What “counts” as knowledge in these contexts?
