Just Images: Knowing and Imagining Visual Narratives of Education

Abstract

This roundtable interrogates the visual discourses operating through narratives of education from a variety of perspectives, in order to reveal not only what is “known” about such narratives, but what they can provide by way of imagining alternatives. We look to a variety of strategies to open up discourses of education that employ what Lyotard (1985) called “imagination,” in the sense that “It is not only an ability to judge; it is a power to invent criteria.” Thus, the papers here employ visual discourse analyses in order to consider the role of visual images as an ethics of imagination in opening alternative conditions of possibility in terms of education narratives, rooted not in ontology but in creativity and justice.
