On the Use of Music as a Pedagogical Tool

Abstract

Two action research studies were conducted to explore the effects of using music to enhance achievement and capitalize on music as a pedagogical tool. The first study provided a context for all the potential uses of music to enhance engagement and achievement by teachers identified as high implementers. The second study, was conducted in three kindergarten classrooms in a southern CA coastal town serving a population of approximately 70% latino and second language learners and 30% other ethnicities including white, African American and Asian. The two studies provide descriptive evidence to support the tenet that music is a powerful learning modality particularly useful to support the achievement of second language learners.
