Using Feedback to Improve Language Learning: Narratives from Colombian Students

Abstract

Providing the right kind of feedback to students who are learning a second or foreign language makes a significant difference in their academic success. The feedback students get enables them to recognize their strengths and limitations and helps them to plan a course of action that will allow them to improve their learning. In this study we examine the perspective of students in Colombian secondary schools about the type of feedback that helps them improve learning. Through the use of in-depth interviews with 40 students, we present key findings on the kind of feedback that facilitate learning and the one that is not very effective in helping students improve their success. We will also highlight effective practical feedback methods.
