Embedded Assessment Activities as Reciprocal Practice: How Research and Evaluation Can Give Back to Participants

Abstract

While studies may adhere to high standards in terms of ethics, authenticity, and protecting participants, they can often do more. In most circumstances, educational researchers should complete the circle from data collection to reporting by sharing findings with populations of interest. Data collection strategies can be intentionally designed to enhance, inspire, or reinforce learning—and by doing so, researchers give back to those who contributed to their studies. This paper provides examples of embedded assessment strategies that were designed to give back to the Native American middle school student populations studied. Findings generated data that were more robust than traditional methods.
