Institutional Transnationalism: Exploring the Japanese High School Sojourner Student’s Everyday World

Abstract

Drawing on an institutional ethnography approach (Smith, 1987), this paper examines the sojourning experience of Japanese high school students living in an upper Midwestern state in the U.S. and addresses how their everyday world is institutionally coordinated at the intersection of corporate transnationalism and state/local/school educational policies and practices. Through exploring the student's educational, intercultural, social, and transnational experiences, I aim to shed light on their specific educational needs for successful learning that could fully develop their potential, needs that are fundamentally distinct from those of other groups of English language learners, such as immigrant, refugee, and international students.
