Does Advanced Academic Study Help Middle-Achieving High School Students? An Experimental Test of AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination)

Abstract

The AVID program, which stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination, focuses on helping “middle-achieving” students achieve their academic potential and thus increase access to postsecondary education.This paper reports results for grade 9 through Grade 12 from the BC AVID pilot project - a randomized field experiment conducted in British Columbia. The project was developed to determine to what extent AVID could transfer to a Canadian context and be effective there. The objective is to determine whether making AVID available to its target group increases the chances that members of that target group enrol in more rigorous study in high school, improve their achievement in high school and enrol in post-secondary education.
